In 2017, a power transmission company entered Brazil with large-scale projects and faced skepticism due to its unfamiliarity in the market and the sensitivity of its flagship project across the Amazon. Speyside led strategic communications and stakeholder engagement, emphasizing the project’s benefits and addressing key concerns like licensing and social tensions. As a result, the company secured environmental licenses ahead of schedule, gained tax incentives, and built credibility through strong relationships with media, influencers, and authorities in Brazil’s energy sector.

Background

In 2017, a leading power transmission developer entered Brazil in 2017 and, in just two years, acquired ten major electric power transmission line projects totaling 3,800 km of transmission lines and around USD 2 billion in committed investments.

The company was largely unknown in the Brazilian market and faced skepticism over its ambitious strategy. It was also unfamiliar with the government and stakeholder relations challenges linked to its flagship project—a transmission line spanning hundreds of miles across the Amazon, designed to deliver energy from one region to the rest of the country. The project carried particular sensitivity due to a history of high social tensions in the area, including the deployment of the National Force during the construction of a similar transmission line

Approach

Speyside supported the client both on strategic communications and stakeholder engagement, positioning it as a committed, capable new player in Brazil’s energy sector. Speyside’s team highlighted the project’s economic and social benefits, mapped and mobilized key stakeholders, and created a constructive environment for addressing licensing, tax, social and financing issues. Early-warning systems were established to anticipate and manage potential delays or conflicts.

Impact

The company obtained environmental licenses ahead of schedule, including a record-time Installation License with minimal conditions. Speyside also facilitated tax incentives and access to public financing. By mapping journalists, influencers, and opinion leaders, and hosting targeted events and briefings, the company established lasting relationships and became a credible, trusted source in Brazil’s energy market.
