Shaping Public Policy for Diabetes Management

Healthcare
Public Policy

To support diabetes policy reform in Mexico, a pharmaceutical company worked with Speyside to go beyond glucose control and emphasize the prevention of cardiovascular and kidney complications. Speyside implemented a multi-phase strategy that included stakeholder mapping, policy analysis, communication campaigns, and workshops. The project engaged policy champions and strengthened collaboration between patient groups, health professionals, and policymakers—laying the groundwork for a national response that prioritizes early diagnosis, prevention, and better treatment outcomes.

Background

A multinational pharmaceutical company partnered with Speyside to advance public policy reform in diabetes care in Mexico. The goal was to shift the national focus beyond glucose control to include  prevention and management of cardiovascular and renal complications. The initiative sought to raise awareness about the risks of heart failure and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people living with diabetes, while promoting early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes.

Approach

Speyside designed and executed a multi-phase strategy integrating policy advocacy, awareness-building, and stakeholder capacity development. The team conducted stakeholder mapping and policy analysis to promote the inclusion of cardiovascular and renal care within national diabetes policies, developed targeted communication materials in collaboration with partners, and created toolkits and workshops to align stakeholders on improved approaches to diabetes care.

Impact

The project identified and engaged policy champions, creating momentum for policy discussions on comprehensive diabetes care. Targeted communications elevated public and professional awareness of cardiovascular and renal risks associated with diabetes. Strengthened collaboration between patient groups, healthcare professionals, and policymakers laid the foundation for a coordinated national response that prioritizes prevention, early detection, and timely treatment.
